A-Part

1to1 Wooden construction, no glue, no screw

This is a place to be A-PART of and from the faculty. A place to retreat, rest, and take a break. Walk in, climb up, find your spot, move the shutters, and make it your own. Inhabit it, experience it, but please do not enter it with more than two people.

Located in front of the library at the TU Delft Faculty of Architecture, A-Part is a wooden structure crafted in just six weeks by a team of six individuals. Constructed entirely from wood, it employs no screws or glue, relying solely on the principles of physics and the art of joinery. The design features finger-jointed spruce for the structural components and reclaimed scaffolding boards for the façade. During its one-year lifespan, A-Part provided a sanctuary for many seeking a brief escape from the bustle of the faculty.

A-Part was designed collaboratively, but I played a significant role in developing the joints, bottom gap, floor, steps, and seating structure. My responsibilities extended to the drawings and calculations for the required materials. I also crafted the joints and cut the pieces to their desired shapes using both hand tools and power tools, excluding the window components. Finally, I took charge of the assembly process.

Spontaneous Problem Solving

A matter of time, resources, and decision-making

A-Part underwent numerous transformations during construction, relying on minimal drawings and the creativity and collaboration of the team. Almost every component presented a unique challenge. Given that the project depended on friction, we often found that our chosen methods did not work as planned. This necessitated quick adaptations, allowing us to continue making progress without interruption.

The challenges of 1:1 construction, coupled with the dynamics of teamwork, proved to be more significant and rewarding than the design itself. Ultimately, the experience fostered growth and innovation, enriching the overall process.
