Diaries of Domesticity
Language and modeling, as tools of architectural education
Diaries of Domesticity is a collection of three projects I completed as part of The Space of Words course (AR1MET011-B) at Delft University of Technology. This collection features a dictionary of domestic sounds, showcasing my contributions to it. Additionally, it includes a poem paired with a domestic object that embodies its essence, and culminates in the Sound Chandelier, an installation of domestic sounds located in the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment.
1/ I’m all ears
2/ Agarwood’s Faith
The hand-made wooden object in front of you is more than a simple incent holder, it is an object that tells the story of agarwood accompanied by a poem. The agarwood’s tale empowered by mundane, and domestic smells, tells you the tale of our lives. The smoke inside, reveals the title of the poem once the lid is placed to take it out.
3/ Sound Chandelier
Noun
/saʊnd//ˌʃændəˈlɪr/
sound.chan·de·lier (the; m; plural: sound chandeliers)
An object hanging from the ceiling, made of mobiles with multiple branches, that positions wooden sound blocks in space. These hollow blocks, soundless in solitude, are able to make a sound when they interact. However, you need to shake and wake them. By standing underneath and swinging the rope attached to each mobile, the sound blocks start to swing around in the air. Sometimes they meet and greet, sometimes they hit and scream, maybe they threaten each other; who knows. By using this device, one will find his-/herself in a personal unique experience. The user has control over this sound. Various sounds can be created by shaking, twirling, and swinging the three different ropes. Users can create their own symphony by playing in various directions and speeds and by alternating or combining the sounds of the different mobiles. Here, in the eye of the staircase, the hollow void above your head will reverberate every little sound, while embracing the sound chandelier.
